Nellie E. James, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Cedarwood Healthcare Center, Colorado Springs, of congestive heart failure. She was born April 15, 1923, in Vandergrift, and moved from Lower Burrell to Colorado Springs in 2001. Mrs. James served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., working in U.S. Intelligence. Her father, Thomas I. George, of Lower Burrell and a Marine recruiter, swore her into the Marine Corps in 1942. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of New Kensington and worked in real estate management while living in Lower Burrell. Survivors include her daughter, Judy Schiller, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons, Miles James, of Quito, Ecuador, and William James, of Wichita, Kansas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lois Groomes, of Murrysville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Israel George and Mary Elizabeth Klingensmith George; her husband, Thomas Albert James; and son, Charles Edward James. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2011, in Mrs. James' sister's church, Murrysville Alliance Church. Graveside interment will be private at Vandergrift Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, New Kensington.
