Lois Belle (George) Groomes, 93, of Murrysville, Westmoreland County, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020.

She was born May 18, 1927, in Vandergrift, the daughter of the late Thomas I. George and Mary Elizabeth George, of Lower Burrell.

She retired in 1987 as a high school guidance counselor from Churchill Area High School; in prior years, she was a former physical education/health teacher with Churchill schools, and before that with Oakmont Schools. She was a graduate of New Kensington High School ('45), the University of Pittsburgh (bachelor's, '49), and the University of Pittsburgh (master's, '68). Throughout her lifetime, Lois was involved in many professional associations (county/state counselor's associations, local/state education associations), community clubs (women's clubs, garden clubs, Siberian Husky club), church ministries (Sunday school, Bible study, VBS, deaconesses, missions), and Republican political organizations (local/state/national). She was also a dedicated volunteer with the American Red Cross. Lois spent many years as a lifeguard and swimming instructor and used her aquatics training when she became the "first female lifeguard in Allegheny County" (way back when), and as a camp counselor at a saltwater sailing camp in Morehead City, N.C. Lois lived in Western PA her entire life (Vandergrift, Butler, New Kensington, Oakmont and then Murrysville for 47 years). The last decade of her life, she resided at Redstone Highlands (Murrysville/Independent Living, nine years) and then Redstone Highlands (Murrysville/Assisted Living, two years).

She was predeceased by her second husband of more than 31 years, the late Cecil Berl CB Groomes.

Lois is survived by her two adult children, daughter, Jamie Walker Burns and husband, John and daughter Susan Walker Swift and husband, Jon; three adult stepchildren, Cynthia Benedick, Dr. Roderick Groomes and Andralee Sorrels; extended family of much-loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, niece, nephews, cousins and friends;

She was predeceased by an older sister, Nellie Emily (George) James, of Colorado Springs, Colo. (formerly of Lower Burrell); and by her ex-first husband of 19 years, John M. Walker Jr., of Oakmont.
