Nellie Morton

Nellie Mapes, the eldest daughter of Polly and Tyler Mapes, was born in Henry county, Ill., on August 15, 1873, and departed this life at her home in Haddam, KS. May 27, 1960 at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Her early life was spent in the vicinity of Kewanee, Ill. At the age of 11, she came to Kansas with her parents in a covered wagon and continued to live there until her death.

On December 23, 1891, she was united in marriage to Norman Morton at Belleville, KS. To this union five children were born; Edna, Zora, George, Glenn, and Eva.

Mrs. Morton spent the greater part of her wedded life in and around the Haddam community where Mr. Morton was engaged in farming until 1940 when they moved into Haddam and resided until their death. At an early age Mrs. Morton was united with the Christian Church.

She leaves to mourn her passing, Mrs. Zora Allen, North Platte, NE., Mrs. Eva Jones, Marion, Ill., George Morton, Mahaska, KS., and Glenn Morton of Haddam, KS.; two daughters-in-law, three sons-in-law; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a number of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, three brothers, one sister and daughter, Mrs. Edna Ginn.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church with Rev. Don O'Hara officiating, Interment was in the Haddam Cemetery.
