The Mapes family formerly lived on a farm in the Haddam community. For the past number of years the family lived in Wichita.

William Mapes, son of Polly and Tyler Mapes, was born in Henry County, Illinois, on March 12, 1879, and departed this life at the Wesley Hospital, Wichita, Kansas, on December 4, 1948 at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 22 days. At the age of 5, he came with his parents to Republic County, Kansas, where he spent most of his life.

On January 16, 1904, Mr. Mapes was united in marriage to Jennie Alexander. To this union five children were born, Kenneth, Erma, Cleo, Virgil and Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Mapes began married life on the farm and continued to farm for a number of years. During the later years of his life, he was engaged in the barbering business in Haddam, Scandia and Cuba. In June 1937 he and Mrs. Mapes moved from Cuba to Wichita where he barbered as long as health permitted, It was here that he spent the rest of his life.

Mr. Mapes was preceded in death by his mother and father, Polly and Tyler Mapes, and by his brother, George.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Jennie; four sons and one daughter, Kenneth of Yazoo, Mississippi, Mrs. Erma Malgren and Cleo of Golden, Colorado, Virgil and Carroll of Wichita; three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Christine Mapes, Mrs. Ruby Mapes and Mrs. Sophia Mapes; one son-in-law Elmer Malgren; seven grandchildren; one brother, James Mapes; a number of nieces, nephews cousins and many friends.

At an early age Mr. Mapes was baptized in the Christian church. Those who knew him will remember his kindness and generosity. He was always ready to assist any who might need his help.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Haddam Methodist church, with the Rev. Miss Nina Anderson officiating. Interment was made in the Mill Creek cemetery.
