Her father's name was Hagop and his last name was likely Minassian. Esther's maiden name is given in some records as Hagopian, which likely refers to her as "child of Hagop", while others give it as Minassian, which was probably the wider family name presumably from an earlier ancestor named Minas. Esther's mother Isgouhi was living in Turkey as of 1905. Esther and her sister Helen left Turkey in 1905, their last residence having been the port of Smyrna, perhaps they had gone there from Arapkir to get on a boat rather than having lived there for a long period. They took a ship from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, arriving there December 6, 1905. They were met by Garabed Mukhalian who became their guardian. He was the husband of Nartouhi who happened to be a Minassian so perhaps there was a relation. Esther married Missak Chalukian on June 16, 1906.

It should also be noted that Esther is buried in a lot next to that of Mugur Hagopian, who lodged with her family in 1910. Therefore it is possible that Esther and Mugur were related. At Esther's death she lived at 6123 Walnut Street in Philadelphia.
