Gordon E. Gulbranson, 84, formerly of Sioux Falls and Vista, Calif., died April 17, 2000, at his daughter's home in Austin.

He was born Oct. 14, 1915, in Flandreau. He grew up and graduated from high school in the area, then moved to Rapid City. He married Verlyn Berry in 1938.

He served in the U.S. Navy in San Diego during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to South Dakota, where he worked as a contractor building roads and dams in South Dakota and Iowa. He had lived in Austin, Texas, for the last 18 months.

Survivors include two daughters: Sandy Larson of Austin, and Lisa Swallow of Missoula, Mont.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters: Lou Nace of Flandreau, and Margaret Smith of Ocala, Fla.; and four brothers: Irvin of Birmingham, Ala., John of Arcadia, Fla., and Ole and Claude, both of Anne Maria Island, Fla.

Services were held in Texas April 26, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on May 12, 2000, at the Flandreau United Methodist Church in Flandreau with burial in Union Cemetery.

Gordon E. Gulbranson was born on October 14, 1915, to Olive and John Gulbranson in Flandreau, South Dakota. After graduating from high school he moved to Rapid City, where he met and married Verlyn Berry in 1938. He served in the Navy in San Diego during WWII, before returning to south Dakota, where he spent his working years as a contractor building roads and dams in South Dakota and Iowa. He retired to Vista, California, later moving to Austin, Texas. On April 17, 200, Gordon passed away at the home of his daughter in Austin, Texas.
He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy and Bob Larson of Austin, Texas, and Lisa and Dann Swallow of Missoula, Montana; five grandchildren; Shelly Larson of Henderson, Nevada; Chad Larson of Austin, Texas; Wade Larson. He is survived by six of his nine siblings, LouElla Nace of Flandreau, South Dakota; Margaret Smith of Ocala, Florida; and brothers: Irvin of Huntsville, Alabama; John of Archer, Florida; and Ole and Claude of Anna Marie Island, Florida.
His strong spirit and delightful sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family, as well as his friends and staff at Buckner Villas in Austin where he lived the last 18 months. Memorial services were held at Buckner Villas on April 26th.
