From Gilbert Eugene Buske:
The Luedtke (Ludtke) family, my grandmother's family, came to America in 1856 from Guetzlaffshagen, or Guezlafs Hafen, and Glansee (now called Golancz) just east of Treptow (now called Trzebiatow) and a few miles west of Karlin. Those towns are sixty miles or so northeast of Stettin (now Szczecin) and four or five miles south of the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Martin Luedtke was born in 1794 in that Treptow- Glansee area of Pomerania. We do not know the name of his wife. Their son Martin (sometimes called John) was born there in Pomerania on March 20, 1821. Martin (John) married Dorotha Schluessel who was born in Glansee on November 18, 1820. (Her parents were Martin and Sophia Schluessel). Martin (John) and Dorotha had three children who were born in Germany, August, Albert, and Amelia (Emilie Caroline Friedericki, my grandmother) who was born on September 9, 1855.
When the Luedtke family, my grandmother's family, came to America in 1856, there was Martin, his son Martin (John), Martin's wife, Dorotha, and their three children. They sailed from Hamburg to Quebec. Then they went to the Port of Detroit and then settled near Cooperstown, in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, which is about twenty five miles southwest of Algoma and which shows on that map. Two more children were born in the United States, Mary, born in 1862, and William, born in 1867.
Martin (John) died on August 22, 1874 "from a blow from a horse" and Dorotha died on April 25, 1910. John and Dorotha are both buried in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Rankin, Wisconsin, which is at the junction of D and 54, about three miles west of Algoma.
