Harvey Langdon Drake was the son of William Harvey Drake and Ida May McKinley. He grew up in Kansas, Pocahontas County, Iowa, and Oklahoma. As a young man, he farmed and did blacksmithing. He served in the U.S. Army between Sep 1917 and Feb 1919. He suffered from the effects of mustard gas, which led to other problems, but it did not keep him from working as a gold miner at Yankee Hill, a carpenter and a lather in southern and northern California. He married Leeta Verle Jones 30 Aug 1919, in Alva, Woods, Oklahoma. They lived in Douglas, Garfield, Oklahoma, where they became the parents of their first two children: Earl Malcolm and Dorothy Pauline. The family moved to Lynwood, California, where their daughter Phyllis Arlene was born. Around 1940, they moved to Paradise, Butte, California, where Harvey lived the rest of his life, dying of cancer a few days short of his sixty-ninth birthday. He was my grandfather, and I liked to watch him work in his shop, where he made things for me, like a pair of stilts I could never master. He was well-loved.
