Richmond enlisted in the Civil War as a Private, March 19th, 1862 at Shelby Springs, Alabama. He died with pneumonia while on active duty at Claytor's Factory Hospital in Lynchburg. He was married to Mary C.(Polly) Leonard, May 23, 1844,in Shelby County, Alabama and they had 11 children. He was the son of James Butler, a Revolutionary War soldier and Candice Dicey. After his death, Mary married Jackson Smith. They are both buried at Salem Cemetery in Calera, Alabama, near their son, George Thomas Butler. A Civil War Confederate marker was placed on Richmond's grave by his great great grandson, Joe. F. Butler & his wife Shirley.
