Agnes Hughes, 91, of Oskaloosa died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born October 22, 1919, at Eddyville, Iowa, the daughter of James and Minnie Rhoads Hughes. She graduated from the Eddyville High School with the class of 1938. Early on she stayed home to help care for her nine siblings. She also helped families with housekeeping in the Eddyville area. Later she worked at Smart and Thrifty Clothing in Oskaloosa. Lastly she worked for Stitely Photo and Hobby Shop as a bookkeeper for 25 years. She also helped out working as a cashier at Neiswangers Cafe. In retirement she enjoyed working at Russell Wildlife. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed doing craft work. She truly enjoyed being an aunt; she delighted in spending time with her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her brother and his wife: Bill and Phyllis Hughes of Eddyville; a sister and her husband Esther and Cecil Flander of Montezuma; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: John Hughes and Bob Hughes; five sisters: Catherine Mark, Dorothy Celanis, Mary Selzer, Edith McConkey, and Sister Francella.

Mass of the Christian Burial for Agnes Hughes will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at 10:30 am in the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa, with Reverend Thomas Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 1 pm in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-8 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
