He was the son of Richard Bates, Jr. and Elizabeth Ann "Eliza" Smith. He married Althea Ann "Letha" Frith on November 19, 1842 in Amite County, MS (Book 3, Page 200). They had at least five children. After Letha died, he married Mary C. McKnight on January 9, 1864 in Amite County, MS (Book 5, Page 351). They had at least two children. Mary was the daughter of Thomas E. McKnight and Mary Simmons.
