Following information taken from the Cottingham genealogy compiled by Arthur Dillon:

Blythe Cottingham was born in Somerset County, marylan, April 1, 1809. He moved to Moores Hill, Indiana, in 1827 with his mother and brothers. He was six foot tall and weighed 160 pounds. He was a very chivalrous and kindhearted man, fiery in disposition. He had piercing blue eyes, blonde hair, high narrow forehead, long face and long upper lip. He was a member of the Baptist church and was choir leader. He was a republican in politics. He was a cooper by trade and also a farmer. He enjoyed considerable local reputation as a poet, orator, humorist and singer. He married Tacy Amanda Sheldon at Moores Hill, Indiana, who was the daughter of Rev. Ichabod and Mary Sheldon, in 1839 and moved to Minnesota in 1861. He died at Cordova, Minnesota in 1880 and is buried in the Cordova cemetery.
