Obituary in THE STATE, Columbia, SC, 8 Jul 2004: Hampton - Mrs. Grace "Gracie" Calvert Parler, 84, widow of Carlisle Clinton Parler, died Monday, July 5, 2004, in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston after a brief illness. Born October 28, 1919, in Abbeville, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Eakin Calvert and Lulie Callaway Calvert. She is survived by one daughter, Pat Wyman and husband Curt of Austin, TX; one grandson, Hugh Carlisle Wyman of Boston, MA and one sister, Janet Calvert of Due West, SC. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha Compton. She is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Gracie grew up in Abbeville and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She received her undergraduate degree from Erskine College where she played the violin in the symphony. She received her masters in education from the University of South Carolina. Sergeant Gracie Calvert served her country as a WAC in World War II from 1942 - 1945 as a cryptographer, coding and decoding secret messages. She participated in campaigns in New Guinea and Luzon and was in Manilla, Philippines when the war ended. She was decorated with numerous service medals and stars. Gracie and Carlisle "Sleepy" were married in 1948 and enjoyed 42 years together. She was a devoted wife. Teaching was her chosen profession. She taught for 38 years, everything from music appreciation to algebra. Her passion was teaching mathematics in grades 6-8. She saw promise in every student who entered her classroom. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Azalea Garden Club. She was a member of the Hampton-Varnville Book Club and Beta Sigma Phil. Gracie enjoyed working in her yard, doing needlework, playing bridge with friends and baking her famous cheese biscuits. She was an active member of the Hampton United Methodist Church. She valued her faith, family and friends above all else. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 AM in the Hampton United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Carolyn Matthews and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton, SC. Friends may call at the chapel on Friday evening from 6 until 8 PM and prior to 10 AM on Saturday when the casket will be placed in the church.
