Mary Ellen Aiken, age 85, of Onalaska, died peacefully, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at her home in Onalaska.

Mary was born Aug. 31, 1925, to Warren and Vivean (Rogers) Aiken at La Crosse Hospital. Her father, Warren was the proprietor of Aiken Coal and Lumber Co., which was founded by his father, Tom Aiken. The business had a long history in the Onalaska business community. Her mother was an elementary school teacher in the area.

Mary was baptized and confirmed at Onalaska United Methodist Church where she remained a member throughout her life. She graduated from Onalaska High School in 1943 and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Madison in 1947. She obtained a public health nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and later a master's degree in public health nursing from the University of North Carolina. In 1955, she received a bachelor's degree in English and sociology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Mary was a member of the honor sorority AFIL and worked in the field of public health nursing for 43 years in the Sparta, Madison and La Crosse areas. She served the last 16 years of her long career with Viterbo University. She was an instructor in public health and supervised students seeking degrees in public health nursing. She retired in 1990. Mary maintained residence in Onalaska throughout her life and resided in the family home until her death.

Mary was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star (O.E.S. No. 249), a charter member of the Onalaska Historical Society and a charter member of the Onalaska Lioness Club. In her early years, Mary enjoyed singing in both the high school and church choirs, playing the trombone and collecting stamps. Later years found her focus on helping those in need, entertaining friends in her home, bicycling and maintaining her property. She loved people as evidence by the many cards written and received throughout each year, and the many meals she prepared and shared with friends and relatives.

She was admired by all for her independence and self-reliance; she will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Warren Jr. and Kenneth Aiken; special friend, Lois Pluckhan; and five first cousins, Jane (Aiken Skogen, Lois (Aiken) Blanchar, Elizabeth (Egland) Gibbs, Jean (Egland) Thompson and Betty (Egland) Armstrong. Mary is the last member of a family generation. She is survived by 15 second cousins of a new generation; three, Tom, Dave and Gary Skogen, reside in Onalaska.

A memorial service will be held at the ONALASKA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH on Monday, May 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Jenny Arneson will officiate. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery.
