In 1921 due to economic reasons and low market sales he could not recieve a fair price for the cotton he harvested. This was the year Alvin, his wife and their three oldest children migrated from from Newburg, Oklahoma to Arizona where their next two children were born. The family moved once again to California and later back to Arizona where he remained for the duration of his life.

An outdoor enthusiasts, he enjoyed taking his family on camping trips traveling on rustic dirt roads to rural locations high into the White Mountains of Arizona where he exercised his love for fly fishing.
