He married Fannie Verone Stewart Sept. 13, 1893 in Jefferson Co., Texas.

They had two children - Walter Stewart Martin (m. Vera G. Jones) and Verone Martin (m. Robert R. Stafford, Jr.).

"Lumberman To Be Buried In Magnolia Cemetery With Masonic Honors

"Port Arthur, Texas, July 11 – Funeral services for W.A. Martin, 56, of 101 Dryden Place, prominent lumberman of east Texas and southwest Louisiana for many years, who died last Sunday morning aboard a train en route to the Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Md., will be conducted at 9:30 Thursday morning at the First Methodist church, south, with Rev. V.A. Godbey of Marshall, Texas officiating.

"Burial will take place in the Magnolia cemetery at Beaumont, under the direction of Grammier-Dismukes undertakers. The Beaumont Masonic lodge of which Mr. Martin was a member will conduct the rites at the cemetery.

"Mr. Martin was born in Trinity, Texas, and had for more than 40 years been identified with the lumber industry in east Texas and southwest Louisiana. He was for a number of years connected with John N. Gilbert of Beaumont in the Nona Mills Company at Leesville, La. He later was general manager of the American Lumber Company in Merryville, La. He is credited with the distinction of being the first man to bring lumber through the port of Beaumont.

"In 1922 he moved to Port Arthur where he purchased the E. A. Laughlin Lumber Company, changing it to the Martin Lumber Company. He operated this concern as its president until his death. His son, W. Stewart Martin, is general manager of the Martin Lumber Company.

"Mr. Martin had been in poor health and had left this city last Friday for Baltimore, where he intended to go through the clinic at the Johns Hopkins hospital. Mrs. Martin and Dr. R.R. Orrill accompanied him on the trip. He died at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, four hours out of Baltimore.

"The body arrived in Beaumont at 6:30 Tuesday night, accompanied by Mrs. Martin, Dr. Orrill and R.R. Stafford, a son-in-law, who went to New Orleans to meet the funeral party."
