Milton Edward Chadwick, 93, passed away Tuesday morning, after being a resident at Fairhaven North in Upper Sandusky, Ohio since December 2007. He was born March 25, 1915 in Mifflin Township of Wyandot County to Milton Harrison and Mary Gertrude (Altvater) Chadwick.
He is survived by three children: Milton Earl Chadwick and his wife, Marion of Miamisburg, Ohio; Derinda "Dede" and her husband Charles Jones of Greenville, SC; and Phoebe A. Chadwick, Greenville, SC. A son James Edward Chadwick was killed in Vietnam in May 1967.
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Malia (Chadwick) and husband Shawn Sutter of Dayton, Ohio; Mindy (Chadwick) and husband Geoffrey Stobart of Lewis Center, Ohio; Emory Jones of Greenville, SC; Dirk Turner and wife Darcy of Bellbrook, Ohio; and Kelli (Turner) and husband Eric Pfiffner of Springboro, Ohio. Surviving with the grand and step grandchildren are 8 great grandchildren: Bailey, Seth, and Grayson Stobart; Morgan, and Molly Pfiffner; Abby and Lauryn Turner; and Kaylie Sutter.
Finally, he is survived by a sister Mary Evelyn (Chadwick) and her husband Everett Scheck of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and a brother Marion R. Chadwick and his wife Dorothy of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Preceding him in death besides his son James were three brothers George, Lawrence, Kenneth, and two sisters Goldie (Mrs. Charles Hansen) and Nina ( Mrs Irving Tooman).
On June 15, 1941 Milton married Dorothy Geraldine Crist, who died August 23, 1983, and is buried at Old Mission Cemetery, also deceased is his a special friend Etta Eley, who died January 4, 2008.
As a youth Milton belonged to the Mifflin Grange, Bethany Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Upper Sandusky High School Debate Team and graduated in 1933.
During World War II he was a Sergeant in the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion of the 82nd Airborne Division. As a member of the original 82nd, he participated in all of the 82nd's campaigns of WWII: North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy (France), Holland, and the Bulge (Belgium and Germany). For his war effort he was awarded the Bronze Star, the French Jubilee of Liberty, The Presidential Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medals. He was a Charter Member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association.
After the war he returned to his employment with Kinley's Dairy until 1967 and eventually retired in 1980 from employment with the Wyandot County Courthouse. From 1968 to 1994 Milton served as the Janitor of First Lutheran Church.
Milton always enjoyed public service and at First Lutheran Church he served for thirty years as a Sunday school teacher, a two term church council member, janitor, and occasional preacher during pastoral absences. At the Wyandot County on Aging he was a regular senior citizen participant, volunteer and Senior Club member for twenty-eight years.
In 1987 Milton published a book of his poetry entitled "Paths and Places." His other writings include: "World War II as I Saw It," and "My Childhood in Mifflin Township". Milton was a collector and lover of poetry.
Funeral services will be held at First Lutheran Church, in Upper Sandusky on Thursday, July 10th at 11 am with Pastor Julianne Smith officiating. His body will lay in state with the family receiving guests from 10 am to 11 am at the church. Following the service internment will be at the Old Mission cemetery with military honors conducted by local veterans organizations. The Women of the Church will provide a luncheon for the family following the internment.
