Zenas was a depot agent in a small town in Kansas before going west. He followed his older brother Isaac to Wyoming about 1900 and went on to settle in Oregon in 1910. There he was involved in forest and paper industries in Troutdale and Oregon City. Knowing his three sons, he must have been a wit, as was Uncle John.

NOTE: from a letter written by Zeruiah in 1947, "Zenas left home to study medicine. . . . Zenas practiced medicine for awhile and some new law came up about diplomas so he gave it up and went into the regular army for a few years, and then married."

Facts as told by Archie Schenck (son of Zenas) in September 1998:

Besides the occupations listed above Zenas also worked in a post office, butchershop, saw mill, and as a farm hand. He was described as having a "firm set of mind."
