Michael HANNAN entry into the USA was either thru Canada(low passenger fares from County Limerick to Quebec) or Boston or New York City. His departure from Ireland coincided with overpopulation. He came to Iowa in 1838, when Iowa was still a Territory of the United States and after treaties with the Indians(Sac & Fox) had opened up new lands for settlement. His prior residence may have been New York where he may have married Catherine WALLACE.
His first land purchase may have been a U.S. Land Grant. This farm seems to have been in Sec. 3 of Centre Twp. of Dubuque County, IA. The land seemed to straddle the Centre & Jefferson Twp. line of Dubuque Co. IA between Durango & Rickardsville. The land was heavily wooded, drained by several creeks, & a few miles North of a branch of the Maquoketa River.
Until the 1860's, when a frame - St. Joseph's of Rickardsville was erected, Roman Catholics(A lot of French Canadians) attended a little log church at Five Points(Named for the intersection of five roads) – about two miles South of the present day St. Joseph's on the Section 4&5 Line in Center Twp. – only a mile or so from Michael HANNAN's farm in Section 3 of Center Township. In the 1840's & 1850's Irish and French-Canadians shared the log church. This log church was replaced after 1860 by St. Joseph's at Rickardsville which was replaced in 1902 but this structure was destroyed by fire in 1915 along with many of the records prior to 1915 limiting research on those living in the area in the 1800's – however the log church records prior to 1852 fortunately survived because they were included in the records of St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque IA.
Michael HANNAN began a flurry of activity on 17MAY1848, when he purchased 36 acres(Sec. 3 Centre TWP Dubuque Co. IA) for $50.00 from Anthony CLINE of Clair County, OH. On 22APR1849, he purchased 18 acres of land(Sec. 34 Jefferson Twp., Dubuque Co. IA) for $22.11 from John BURTON of Dubuque Co. IA. On 9JUN1849, he bought 30 acres(Sec. 34 Jefferson Twp., Dubuque Co. IA) for $50.25 from Richard & Jane BONSON of Dubuque Co. IA. His last purchase before death was on 13APR1850 of 80 acres(Sec. 34 Jefferson Twp., Dubuque Co. IA) for $150 from John & Electra FLINN of Delaware Co. IA.
Earlier on 22FEB1849, he joined with Henry CARTER, John PERRY, Joseph ATKINSON, Jonathan HOUPS SR, Wm. WOODHOUSE, Catherine HANNON, Nancy MONTGOMERY, & Michael ROACH in the purchase of five acres of land in Dubuque Co. IA(Sec. 34 Jefferson Twp. Dubuque Co. IA) from Thomas & Amelia BROWN for $10 which may have been for a church, school, or cemetery.
1874 Dubuque Co. IA plat maps showed 63.34 acres in the Northern Half of Section 3 of Concorde Twp. under the name of C. HANNAN(probably widow Catherine HANNAN) & 160 acres in the Southern Half of Sec. 34 of Jefferson Township under the name of M. HANNAN(probably Michael HANNAN JR). Neighbors in Jefferson Twp. Sec. 34, were Andrew CONSIDINE. Section 3 of Concorde Twp. and Section 34 of Jefferson Twp. were adjacent to each other West of present day Durango.
