U.S. Congressman. After he graduated from the law department of the University of Iowa in 1874, he was admitted to the bar and opened a law practice in Mount Sterling, Illinois. He was appointed master in chancery for Brown County, Illinois in 1885 and served as judge of Brown County (1886-92). In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
