Born in Unity Township, the son of John Jacob Sr. and Maria Magdelena Crispen Walter. He was the brother of John Jacob Jr., Elizabeth, Mary Polly, Peter, Ann, Christina and Philip Walter. Around 1826, he married Elisabeth Huffman, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Huffman and was the father of Eleanor (Huffman), Maria (Ayres, Martin), Evaline (McKinley), Elizabeth (Surrena), John H., Catherine (Gilmore), Matilda Mae (McFadden), Phoebe Ann (Forman), Jacob Hoffman and Emily Walter.
