James Empson Laff was born June 27, 1864 in Champaign, Champaign, Illinois. He was the second son to Joseph Laff and Sarah Ann (Albin). His family had moved from Illinois to Missouri and later to Kansas in his early life. He married Laura Delphina Shreve on April 28, 1893 in Kingman, Kansas and had three children.: Roscoe Valentine, Lily Viola and Leon Milton.
James lived most of his life in Beloit, Mitchell, Kansas and worked much of his life as a painter. His wife died young in 1904 and he never remarried.
