World War I Veteran

Chris was the son of Christian Boje and Louise Fetzer. He married Henrietta Baak on January 14, 1920 in Carroll, IA. They were the parents of Elvira. He died from an accidental gunshot wound.

April 23, 1924 - Carroll Times - The accidental discharge of a shot gun proved fatal to Chris. Boje, well known Carroll county farmer, Saturday afternoon. Mr. Boje, together with his uncle, Gus Schluter, was preparing to come to Carroll to do some trading Saturday afternoon in their farm wagon. Mr. Boje concluded to bring his shot gun with him for the purpose of shooting at a dog which had been in the habit of following him, hoping to scare the animal and get it out of the practice of following wherever he went. As he attempted to step in his wagon with the gun in his hands it was accidentally discharged, the contents taking effect in the thick portion of his leg near the hip and severing the main artery in that region.

The blood flowed freely from the wound, and the injured man was brought to St. Anthony's hospital in this city as soon as possible, but it was impossible for him to withstand the loss of blood and his death occurred soon after his arrival at the hospital. The body was taken to the home of his father-in-law, W.C. Baak, in this city where it was prepared for burial.

Chris Boje was the son of the late Chris Boje and Mrs. Louise Boje, and was born in Sheridan township, September 16, 1892. He grew to young manhood in Sheridan township and was one of its most respected and highly thought of young men. With a kindly word and a smile for every one, he easily endeared himself to a large circle of friends.

He took his part in the World War and left for Camp Gordon, Ga., July 26, 1918, with Company of the 5th Replacement Reg. He served overseas from September, 1918, until the end of the war. Mr. Boje received his honorable discharge from duty and returned to Carroll April 6, 1919.

On January 14, 1920, he was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Baak. They have one little daughter, Elvira. Besides his wife and child he is survived by his mother, who is sick and in a critical condition, three brothers, Frank, Harry, and Albert, and one sister, Mrs. William Kurth.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their sorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Boje had lately moved to this vicinity from Auburn and were making plans for a splendid year on the Stevens farm, northeast of town. Funeral services were held in the Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. A.J. Mueller officiating. Burial was made in the Carroll cemetery.
