She was born March 30, 1919, in Vevay, the daughter of George Sanford and Martha Richter Furnish. She was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1937 graduate of Vevay High School. She worked early in life for Gretchen Cole Lawyer at Law and for the Richardson Insurance Agency. She had resided in Jefferson County the past 41 years and was a member of the North Madison Baptist Church. She had worked for the U.S. government for 41 years, retiring in 1981. She spent 37 years of her career at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison and four years at the Indiana Arsenal in Charlestown and retired as the transportation officer. She enjoyed researching family genealogy, reading and spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters.
She is survived by her husband, Norris Wayne Howard, whom she married Oct. 22, 1958; one daughter, Susan Howard Schafer of North Vernon; one son, John N. Howard of San Francisco; one stepdaughter, Jane Wakeland of Greenfield; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one great-grandson; two nieces; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, George E. Furnish, who died Jan. 26, 1971; one sister, Lucille Pommerehn, who died Aug. 30, 2001; one stepdaughter, Ann Shepherd; and two nephews.
The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery.
