Birth Date: According to the Jackson Co., WV Death Register, Marshall was born May, 1842, however, US census records of 1850 & 1860, and his marriage certificate, indicate his birth year as being later, around 1845. His obituary stated that he was 50 years old, making his birth year 1845.

Obituary (Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, p2; Tuesday, May 28, 1895): "LINN COUNTY: Marshall Calvert of West Virginia, died Friday morning at the home of his brother, John Calvert, after a short illness. He was fifty years old and leaves a wife and six children. his remains were interred in the Springville cemetery." His death record states he died of heart disease.

Civil War Service: Marshall Calvert mustered into service, age 18 [probably 16 yrs.], on December 27, 1861. He was a private in Co. I, 11th West Virginia Infantry, under the command of Dixon R. King. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer, January 14, 1864. He was reassigned to Co. F, 10th West Virginia Infantry around June 17, 1865. He mustered out August 9, 1865, at Richmond, Virginia.

Physical description at age 18: 5 ft, 6 in.; fair complexion, gray eyes, light hair.

On January 27, 1868, he married Mary E. Mills in Jackson Co., WV, where they both lived.

Josephine Calvert b. Oct. 1869; married 1885 to Lafayette G. Fields, Jackson Co., WV.; Josephine died in 1907, prior to June 30, when Lafayette remarried Frances Arminta Hardman.
