She graduated from Western Carolina University in 1954 and began her teaching career in Charlotte. She taught throughout the North Carolina public school system until retirement in 1991. Her love of teaching and love of children was ever present in her life.
She was a devout Christian and dedicated herself to God first, and to her family and church and community. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville where she was a teacher in many ways, a Girl Scout leader and choir member. She was past president of the Christian Woman's Club, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Brawley had been given the gift of song and loved singing in the church choir as well as with Magnify. She truly lived her life looking up at God and reaching out to others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Buford Jarrett. Mrs. Brawley is survived by her husband of 50 years, Pressley Bell Brawley Jr.; children, Mary Ann B. Poteat and husband, Joe, of Davidson, Linda Brawley Wittig and husband, Jeff, of Houston, Texas, Caroline Brawley Gwinn and husband, Layton, of Hopkins, S.C.; grandchildren, Joseph Poteat, Ellie Poteat, Ashbrook Gwinn, Layton Gwinn Jr., Caroline Wittig, Jack Wittig and Virginia Gwinn; sisters, Mary Jean Wall of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Patricia Phifer of Shelby; sisters-in-law, Irene Jarrett and Eleanor Brawley; brother-in-law, Dr. Bob Watson Brawley.
There will be a graveside service at Glenwood Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Fred Coates officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. In honor of Eloise, the family would like for you to do something kind and thoughtful for someone. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville is serving the Brawley family.
