My Great Great Great Grandfather Robert came to the United States as as single man in 1848. He came from North Melos, Lancashire, England where both of his parents (John Barton and Jane Todd Barton) lived and died. He entered through the port of New York and settled in Tonica, Illinois. He was a loving person who cared a lot about family and friends. He married his wife Mary Plowright Saddelton July 19, 1856. He adopted Mary the daughter of his wife from a previous marriage. Together they had 5 sons. Twins Henry and John were born in 1857 and both boys died in 1858 at the age of 1 year. Walter L. was born in 1861; James H. was born in 1864; and George W. was born in 1868. Additionally, he was a farmer and owned ~70 acres of land. He passed away after a lengthy illness. He was well thought of and was called "Uncle Robert" within the community.
