Melissa E. Cotten, 90, Dies Sunday; Services Planned For Tuesday

Mrs. Melissa Evalena* Cotten, 90, widow of the late Olney Bliss Cotten, former Bartlesville business man, died at 4:50 a.m. Sunday in Crystal Hill Inn, Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Cotten had been ill since March of this year.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tusday at The Dudley M. Hughes Chapel, Dallas, Texas. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Bartlesville Memorial Park by the Arnold Moore Funeral Service.

Mrs. Cotten was born on May 14, 1887 at Van Alstyne, Texas. She was reared and received her education there and was married in 1907 in Van Alstyne to the late O.B. Cotten Sr.,** who was city clerk there until moving to Bartlesville in 1927. In 1943 Mrs. and Mrs. Cotten moved to Beaumont, Texas the year of his retirement and he died there shortly after. She was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Dallas, and a Gold Star mother.

Surviving Mrs. Cotten include three daughters, Mrs. Berval Cunningham, Littleton, Colo., Mrs. Mary Smith, Roslyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Carl (Carmon) Berryman, Dallas, Texas; two sons, Travis Cotten, McAllen, Texas and O.B. Cotten, Jr.,*** Albuquerque, N.M., 1l grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Melissa's given middle name is misspelled; it is "Evalina." O.B. Cotten's full name was Olney Bliss Cotten; he was not a "Sr.;" everyone called him "Ollie." Further, O.B. Cotten, Jr. was not a "Jr." His full name was Olney Byron Cotten. His middle name, "Byron," is a variation of a family name on his mother's side of the family. The senior/junior indication was a common mistake made by many.
