Mary Hamlet was the daughter of Eli Hamlet and his wife, Mary Richardson, of Dracut, MA. About 1810 she came to Brownville with her parents and younger brother, Charles R.; siblings Dana Richardson, Anna, Ephraim Richardson, Joseph Bradley and Laura Jane were born there between 1813 and 1828. 08 Nov 1832 Mary married Reuben Withington at Old Town, ME. (I find no further record of him.) The couple had at least two children, George Withington and Mary Jane Withington. (George married Sarah M. Badger 10 Jul 1869; Mary Jane married Orville Glidden about 1854.) In the 1850 Brownville Census, Mary Hamlet and son George are living with her parents. In 1860 Mary is living with daughter Mary Jane and Orville Glidden. In 1970 Mary is living with George and Sarah Withington. In 1880 Mary is listed both in the regular Brownville Census with the Gliddens and in the Brownville Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinqent Classes, suffering from "Old age & cancer." She died 29 Jun 1881 and is buried next to her parents and her son. (George had died in 1877 and his widow and children were living in 1880 in the Sebec town almshouse.)
