J.O. BOWLES, PIONEER MART RAILROAD MAN, PASSES AWAY
The many friends of the family wer saddened to learn of the death of J.O. Bowles, 71, who passed away Saturday at 6:10 p.m. in the Missouri Pacific Hospital at Palestine after a fatal illness of more than four months in that institution. James Oscar Bowles was born at Bryan, Texas, Feb. 14, 1871. He was married to Miss Della Anne Ferrell in 1889 at Salado, Texas and the family moved to Mart in August 1904 when Mr. Bowles became associated with the railroad here. While in the MoPac service he served as trainmaster general yardmaster and conductor and at the time of his death was the oldest passenger conductor on the Fort Worth division in active service. Mr. Bowles was a Mason of long standing, having joined that fraternal order in 1893. He held membership in the "Blue" lodge chapter and councilat Mart; 32nd degree Scottish Rite at Dallas; Knights Templer at Palestine, and Karem Shrine at Waco. He was also a member of the Order of Railway Conductors, division No. 57, Ft. Worth. Funeral services were conducted at Littlepage Funeral Home, Mart, Sunday at 4 p.m. Rev. F.P. Goddard rector of the Episopal church at Marilin being in charge, deceased being a member of that faith since childhood. Interment was made in Mart Cemetery where the local Masonic Lodge was in charge. Mrs. Bowles preceded her husband in death in 1935, also a son Earl Bowles both being buried at Mart. Active pallbearers included: JA Parrott, E.M. Clifton, H.E Lindsey, R.G. Choate, J.C. Smith, & B.E. Watson. Deceased is survived by three sons, Ronald & Curtis Bowles of Mart & Robert Bowles of Houston, also 2 grandchildren.
