BERNICE GOLDSTEIN STEIRN, 86, of Huntington, W.Va., died peacefully at her home February 21, 2007, in the loving company of her three daughters. Bernice was born February 21, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude Meyer Goldstein. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Steirn and a daughter, Harriette Jean Steirn of Baltimore, Md., sister Gail Wise and a brother, Eli Goldstein. She moved to Huntington with her husband and has resided here since 1946. She raised four daughters, graduated from Marshall University with a masters degree in education and worked as a reading specialist for the Cabell County School System. She was an avid swimmer at the YMCA and participated in several book clubs. Bernice Steirn lead a full and active life, including involvement with Hadassah, the B'Nai Sholom Congregation and Sisterhood, the League of Women Voters, the Museum of Art Docent Corps and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. She is survived by three daughters, Marsha Steirn of Denver, Colo., Cathy Steirn (Chris Kinavey) of Oakland, Calif., and Wendy Lieman (Stephen Lieman) of Dallas, Texas; son-in-law David Edwin of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren Joshua Edwin of New York, N.Y., Miriam Edwin of Baltimore, Md., Hillary, Greer and Spencer Lieman all of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Nikki Katz of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a brother, Dan Goldstein of Carlsbad, Calif. She also leaves behind a warm and loving community. The family requests no flowers and those who wish may make memorials to Hospice of Huntington, Hadassah, League of Women Voters, B'Nai Sholom Congregation or the Ronald McDonald House. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2007, at the B'Nai Sholom Congregation by Rabbi David W. Wucher. Interment will follow in the B'Nai Israel section of Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Klingel Carpenter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
