Arvella Higley Martin passed away Dec. 6 at Sweden Valley Manor. Arvella was born Jan 1, 1939 in Oswayo, the daughter of Fred and Lois Higley. She was a graduate of Coudersport High School. On March 15, 1958 in Niagara Falls, NY she married Dale Martin. She graduated from St. Francis School of Practical Nursing in Olean, NY as an LPN and was employed at Charles Cole Hospital. She worked at several nursing institutions throughout her career. She attended Emmanuel Mission Bible School in Transfer, PA, and then took the position of Director of the Emmanuel Mission and the C. L. Lane Children's Home in Wanblee, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She was a foster parent caring for neglected and abused Native American children during her time at the mission. Arvella also served at the Badlands National Park in Interior, SD as a Chaplain. She attended Clarion University and Dakota Wesleyan University where she graduated in May 1997 with a BA in Social Services. Arvella did her internships at the Mitchell, SD Safe-House and Drug and Alcohol Center. She was Director of the Tri-County Half Way House caring for homeless and alcoholic Native Americans in Winner, SD on the Rose Bud Indian Reservation. She attended Lakota Sioux Sinte Galeska University where she studied the Lakota Language. She entered the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio and served 7 different United Methodist Churches, receiving her Ordination as Probationary Deacon and later graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree. Arvella was privileged to take her last Theological class in Cambridge, England where her ancestors lived before coming to America in 1666. She spent 1 year in England serving the United Methodist Church of Great Britain. She specialized in Evangelism where she took intensive courses with Billy Graham in Amsterdam, Holland for the National Evangelist of which she is a member. She was preceded by her parents, husband, and a grandson, SPC Michael Franklin. Arvella is survived by one sister Audrey (Elwin) Sheerer of Meadville, PA and seven children: Tina (Bill) Franklin, Timothy (Kathy) Martin of Coudersport, Terry Martin of Titusville, PA, Thomas Martin of Coudersport, Theodore (Carrie) Martin of Canon City, Colorado and Michael (Elaine) Martin of Havre De Grace, MD. She has 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Fickinger Funeral Home, Coudersport. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Thursday at the Oswayo United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Grimes officiating. Burial will follow in Wells Cemetery in Oswayo.
