Audio pioneer and philanthropist, founder of what is now known as Harman International, most famous for consumer audio products baring the Harman/Kardon brand.

In 1977 and 1978 he served as U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for the Carter administration. In August 2010, he purchased the assets and liabilities of Newsweek Magazine from the Washington Post, reportedly for $1.

He was married to Jane Margaret Lakes, who was U.S. Representative for California's 36th congressional district.
