Carma Johnson Cope, 83, passed away on April 11, 2011 from causes incident to age.
Born August 22, 1927 in Leamington, Millard County, Utah to Alfred Oscar and Geneva Humphries Johnson, she grew up in Springdale and graduated with the Hurricane High School class of 1945.
Her first employment was in tourist services in the lodge of Zion National Park. She also was a clerk in her uncle's grocery store which also served as the local post office.
As the Second World War came to an end, she became acquainted with a young Army Air Corps navigator who visited Springdale. A romance began, but they decided to delay marriage while James served a two-year mission in the Pacific Northwest.
Carma married James Carl Cope on February 6, 1948 in the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They have been married sixty-three years. They began their family while James was still in school.
Two boys were born during these schooling years. After a short teaching assignment in Garrison, Utah, the family moved to the Central Valley of California. Four more children were added to the family.
For fifty-four years, they lived, worked, and raised their family in Hanford. When her children were grown, Carma volunteered to assist in special education for physically handicapped children in the nearby school. Soon recognized for her care and empathy for these children, she was offered employment. She retired from service to the county school system after twenty-one years of service.
Carma and her husband resided in Hanford until their health necessitated moving to Sat Lake City to be closer to family. They always remembered and appreciated the many friends who loved and cared about them while residing in Hanford.
A life-long active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Carma selflessly served in many church positions. She loved little children and was always particularly sensitive to their needs and interests.
She served in both ward and stake positions for the young women and was a loyal supporter and participant in the Relief Society. For more than a decade, Carma and James served as workers in the Los Angeles, Oakland, and Fresno temples.
Carma is survived by her husband James, her two younger brothers, Oscar R. Johnson (Frances), Dennis E. Johnson (Pearl), both of Springdale. She is also survived by her six children: James M. Cope (Merrily), A. Lynn Cope (Debbie), Geneva C. Bentley (Steven D.), Edward L. Cope (Courtney), Cheryl A. Cope, and John Carl Cope (Ann). She has twenty grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Cheryl Johnson Gifford.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, where family and friends may call from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
