GREAT GRANDSON OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR CAPTAIN JOHN GEORGE OVERMIRE

"He learned the saddler trade and married Eleanor Spencer, daughter of William C. Spencer, born near Somerset, O., April 26th, 1834. They were members of the Lutheran Church; he a member of the Masonic fraternity; was a Democrat until after the Civil War, then a Republican; died, December 27th, 1862, and is buried near Somerset, O." --Barnhart B. and John C. Overmyer, 1905 Overmyer History

WARNING: The 1905 Overmyer History by Barnhart B. Overmyer says William died 27 Dec 1862 (during the Civil War), yet it also says William was a Democrat until AFTER the Civil War, which of course ended in 1865. The death date may be an error. Perhaps William died Dec. 27, 1867, if it was a typo. William's wife died Apr. 1870, at which point the children went to live with their uncle Henry W. Spencer. William may have been deceased by then as well or he may have been unable to take care of the children. In any case, he disappears from the records.

The name is spelled "Overmire" in the 1850 census and "Overmier" in the 1860 census.

NOTE: There is a William H. Overmire listed as a private on the roster of Co. H of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He entered the service April 25th, 1861, for 3 months, was mustered out and reenlisted June 20th, 1861, for 3 years. He was wounded and taken prisoner during the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug, 9th, 1862. This William H. Overmire filed for his Civil War pension from Pennsylvania on Jan. 29 1883. Could he be the same William H. shown here? If anyone can positively identify who this man is, please let us know.
