June Maxine Smith Burns, 84, of Hutchinson, Kansas, died on April 7, 2011, at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas, surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of the late Nile "Layton" Burns, whom she married on May 6, 1946, in South Hutchinson. They were longtime residents of Hutchinson, and were the owners of Smith's Market from 1965 until their retirement in 1985. Following retirement, June was a volunteer at the Hutchinson Hospital for many years.

Born June 22, 1926, June was the daughter of Henry E. and Minnie C. Smith. She belonged to South Hutchinson United Methodist Church.

June was a loving and devoted wife and mother who cared deeply for her family and friends. She most enjoyed those times spent together with her family and the happy times with her many friends visiting, sharing meals and playing cards. She enjoyed cooking, going to antique and estate sales, and following Kansas basketball. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by: three sons, Jack, Hutchinson, Bill, Riverside, Conn., and Larry, Lancaster, Penn.; three sisters, Mary Burns, Hutchinson, Ruth Spivey and husband Lee, Hutchinson, and Ruby Jacques, South Hutchinson; a sister-in-law, Mary Frances Burns, Hutchinson; five grandchildren, Brandon Burns and wife, Tara, San Diego, CA., Brent Burns, Phoenix, AZ., William and Claire Burns, Riverside, Conn., and Troy Parks, Wichita; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Smith, and three sisters, Joye Brinkmeyer, Oma Decker and Emadae Wright.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services to be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Ault-Duell officiating. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials may be sent in honor of June Burns to the South Hutchinson United Methodist Church or the Arthritis Foundation, both in care of the mortuary.
