Daniel Hopkins Whitney was born October 19, 1819, at Seneca Castle and died January 1, 1910. He was a grandson of Nathan Whitney, who came to this country from Conway, Mass., in 1792, one of its first pioneers. He was a son of Cheeney and Olive Whitney, and the eldest of a family of eight, four of whom survive him, Hachaliah and Byron of Seneca Castle, Cheeney P. of Orleans and Mrs. Sophronia McGregory of Pasadena, Cal. His wife preceded him more than three years, but kind children and grandchildren helped to make his declining days less lonely. He was industrious and temperate in his habits; by nature and culture quiet and unostentatious, willing to sit in the shadow that another might reap honors. He was a supporter of the Presbyterian church, and a member of its congregation til failing health deprived him of the privilege.

He leaves three children, Mrs. Clara Bond of Billsborough; Mrs. Mabel Parshall and Frank E. Whitney of Seneca Castle, and seven grandchildren. He belonged to a family noted for its longevity, but a sudden attack of pneumonia resulted in his death at the ripe age of 90 years, two months, 12 days. The funeral was held at his late residence at 2 o'clock today. Rev. E. E. Grosh, his pastor, officiated. Burial at Whitney Cemetery.
