The Matthew B. Roberts family moved to Texas not long after the birth of daughter Jaley Priscilla Roberts, probably in 1851.

They came by boat to Indianola, Texas and started for Caldwell County. Matthew Roberts hunted for meat along the way. At one camp, he went out to hunt and didn't come back. When they searched for him, they found him sitting at the foot of a tree with his rifle across his lap terribly ill. They got him to camp where he died very shortly. Descendants thought it was cholera or yellow fever. He was buried at Cheapside Cemetery in southern Gonzales County.
