James Minshall was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England to John & Elisabeth (Walton) Minshall. Sometime in the late 1830's James, along with his brothers, Benjamin & Silas travelled from Liverpool, England to the United States. They initially settled in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and eventually all three brothers migrated to Sugar Creek, Walworth County, Wisconsin. It is unknown whether James married Hannah Rebecca Campbell in England or Pennsylvania. By the time they arrived in Walworth County, Wisconsin they had one son, George Henry Minshall who was born on September 23,1840 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After his wife, Hannah's death, James continued to work on his farm with his son, George Henry. George Henry eventually married his cousin, Mary Ann Minshall (daughter of Silas & RoseAnn Minshall). James Minshall lived to see all 10 of his grandchildren born on his farm. He died of complications from a stroke at the age of 79 on July 2, 1897.
