He was the son of Elijah and Rebecca (Shockley) Coffey. He married Martha Wolfe on Dec. 25, 1876, in Grainger County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Henry "Pat" and Elijah Coffey.
He married Mary Hipshire about 1889 in Tennessee. They were the parents of Evey, James Archie "Arch," Ralph, Daniel "Dan," Angie, Arkie, Lucy, Rosie and Myrtle Coffey.
