Elaine Siddoway Richards Bingham passed away on April 7, 2011, at the age of eighty-nine, shortly after enjoying a neighborhood stroll on a sunny day with her husband, Charles.

Born January 18, 1922, she was raised by her grandparents, William and Emily Siddoway, in Vernal, Utah, a community that always remained close to her heart.

After graduation from Vernal High School, Elaine attended Utah State University, where she met pre-med student Ralph Chamberlain Richards. They were married on June 8, 1943.

Ralph enjoyed a successful career at the University of Utah as a general surgeon and Professor of Surgery, with Elaine by his side as mother to their son, Courtney, and as an elegant hostess welcoming many colleagues, medical residents and friends into their home.

Throughout his career, Elaine and Ralph traveled extensively. From 1963-1965, they lived in Nigeria, where Ralph was Visiting Professor and Head of the Dept. of Surgery at the University of Ibadan.

Together, they earned the love and respect of the Nigerian people with whom they developed lifelong friendships. Their thirty-seven-year marriage was cut short when Ralph died suddenly from heart disease in 1980 at age fifty-eight.

After nearly twenty-three years on her own, Elaine married her high school sweetheart, Charles Bartlett Bingham, in 2003. During their eight happy years together, Elaine was delighted to be welcomed lovingly into the large Bingham family, which brought countless joys to the later years of her life. She enjoyed living in her beautiful home on Kristie Lane from 1965 until earlier this year, when she and Charles moved to Sunrise in Sandy.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Charles, his eight children and their families; her son, R. Courtney Richards (Kit), of Red Lodge, Montana; and her two grandsons, David Chamberlain Richards (Sara), of Alta, Utah, and Courtney "Cory" Woodward Richards (Olivia), of Boulder, Colorado.

Known affectionately as their "Mama Lainie," Elaine's presence and influence in their lives will be missed. Elaine loved family car camping trips, fixing Sunday breakfasts in the canyons over a Coleman stove, the U of U Women's Club, and traveling the world.

She was an avid reader and loved to play Bridge. Always interested in others, Elaine had countless friends who enjoyed her quick wit and inquisitive nature.

A memorial service celebrating Elaine's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in the Foothill Seventh Ward Chapel, 2215 East Roosevelt Avenue, Salt Lake City, with a reception immediately following.
