Alice Geraldine Schalch, daughter of Vernon Hugh Schalch and his wife Anna Martha Ansdell Schalch, was born on 20 Apr 1851 in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. She was baptized on 19 May 1851 in Agra, West Midnapore. On 15 Dec 1873, at Fort William, Calcutta, Bengal, India, Alice married Alfred Hinuber Haggard, a barrister with the Bengal Court of Sessions. They had five children, including Admiral Sir Vernon Harry Stuart Haggard, who became Commander-in-chief of the America and West Indies station, as well as diplomat Sir Godfrey Digby Napier Haggard, my great-great-uncle.

Alice and her husband raised their children in Paddington, Middlesex, England and Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. In later life, she moved with her husband and their daughter Beatrice to Bedfordshire, where she was widowed in 1916. Alice died on 27 Apr 1925 in Charmouth, Dorsetshire, England.
