Alfred Hinuber Haggard, son of William Meybohm Rider Haggard and his wife Ella Doveton Haggard, was born on 17 Apr 1849 at Bradenham Hall in Bradenham, Norfolk, England. He was baptized on 3 Jun 1849 at Bradenham. Alfred became a barrister and was with the Indian civil service, in the Bengal Court of Sessions. He was an author as well. On 15 Dec 1873, Alfred married Alice Geraldine Schalch in Fort William, Calcutta, Bengal, India. They had five children, including Admiral Sir Vernon Harry Stuart Haggard, who became Commander-in-chief of the America and West Indies station, as well as diplomat Sir Godfrey Digby Napier Haggard, my great-great-uncle.

Alfred died on 19 Apr 1916 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. He was interred in the family plot at the West Bradenham Churchyard, also known as the Saint Andrew Churchyard, in Bradenham. His headstone is positioned just behind those for his parents.
