US Congressman. Admitted to the Illinois (M. E. Conference) as a traveling Minister, and appointed to the Paoli Circuit in 1830. Assigned to the Crawfordsville Circuit, 1831, assigned to the Bloomington Circuit 1832, located on account of ill health 1834, continued as a local preacher till 1841. During that time he studied law, was admitted to practice, and during the winter of 1841 served as Representative in the Indiana Legislature. His health improved, he returned to the ministry, and was assigned by Conference to Crawfordsville station where he remained till 1843, then stationed at Perrysville during that year. In 1844 to 1845 he stationed at Lafayette. In 1846 stationed at Berry Street Church Fort Wayne. In 1847 appointed presiding Elder of that district. In 1848 re-appointed, during which year his whole right side having become paralyzed, he resigned his office, and took a superannuated relation to the Church. In 1849 was appointed by Gen. Taylor as Register of the land office at Fort Wayne, which he held till the summer of 1851, when he was elected to Congress from that district, and continued till March 4, 1853, after which he was elected to the Presidency of the Fort Wayne College, which he held till the winter of 1855, but in the mean time on the second Tuesday in October 1854, he was elected the second time to Congress, and took his seat in Dec. 1854, and was re-elected to the same office in October 1856. He died of pneumonia in 1857.
