He married Zelda Christina Smethurst July 2, 1937, in Ogden. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. They celebrated 73 wonderful years of marriage. He was a member of the Washington Terrace 13th ward.
Gilbert graduated from Weber High School in 1936. He worked for Superior Honey Co., Summerill Foundry, and Ogden Arsenal. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 32 years of service.
He served in the National Guard, enlisted in the US Navy and served in World War II aboard the Destroyer USS Hailey No. 556. He trained and Certified as an electrician's mate. He earned his Campaign Ribbons (American Theatre of War Asiatic Pacific) and Asiatic Pacific operation stars 2, (Jima & Okinawa). He also has the WWII Victory Medal. He received an honorable discharge Jan. 9, 1946.
Gilbert's hobbies included fishing and hunting. He enjoyed ballroom, square and round dancing. Gilbert and Zelda were Presidents of the Quarter Promenaders in 1972. They enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Mexico, Spain and Africa. Spent a few years in Southern California, Arizona, during the winter months. Gilbert took pride in his yard, and automobiles. He enjoyed playing pinochle and visiting his friends at the New Gate Mall. He was a man of honor and integrity.
He is survived by his wife Zelda; three daughters: Fay (Vern) Stacey, Judy (Bruce deceased) Beckey, and Christine (Kevin) Bailey. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Junius Ray and Mable Owen Taylor; his siblings, Josiah Taylor, Melba McBride, Lawrence Taylor, Deloris Loveland and one sister Marilyn, who died as an infant.
We would especially like to thank Alpine Hospice, Bristol Hospice and George E. Wahlen Veterans Center. You all made a difference. You gave Daddy such joy and dignity. The care Daddy received was exceptional. How can we ever Thank You enough.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2011 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. Friends may call on Sunday, April 10th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
