David Savage Cook, Sr. was born 13 January 1858 in Goshen, Utah County, Utah, United States to Phineas Wolcott Cook and Amanda Polly Savage. He was the first of four children. Little has been recorded about David's childhood. David's father was called to move to Bear Lake Valley in 1863 along with 11 other families. David would have been about 5 years old at that time. The family settled in Swan Creek where a sawmill and flour mill was built by Phineas. David worked in his father's sawmill. Here he meet Lydia Ann Nelson.
David married Lydia in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States on 30 September 1880. Their union was blessed with four children: Lydia Luetta Cook, David Savage Cook Jr., Joseph Nelson Cook and Clarence Cook.
David build a home in Garden City before they married and added on to it as the family grew. He founded a general store and mercantile business. The families first store was a log building on the corner of the lot by their home. He later built a new store across the street from the school house. It is recorded that he extended credit to his customers, who were often unable to pay their bills. Even so, he was quite successful as a businessman.
In 1899 he bought a ranch in Round Valley where is raised hogs and cattle. Later he found more success in raising sheep.
David served as bishop's counselor to Bishop Calder in the Garden City Ward for many years. After he was released from the bishopric he was never very active in the church.
He served as commissioner of Rich county and later as representative at the state legislature in Salt Lake City in the years 1897 to 1899.
He died 27 February 1924 in Garden City, Rich County, Utah, United States. Burial: Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Rich County, Utah, United States
