Memorial service for the Rev. John Samuel Congdon of North Portland will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Arleta Baptist Church. Private vault entombment will be in Lincoln Memorial Mausoleum. Rev. Congdon died Friday at a Portland hospital. He was 74.

He was born in Fort Collins, Colo., and had lived in the Northwest since 1952.

He taught public high school in Colorado and Minnesota and taught for 10 years at South Dakota Junior College before he entered the ministry in 1949. Rev. Congdon served at churches in Roundup, Mont., Osborn, Idaho, and Okanogan, Wash.

From 1952 until 1960, he served at the Calvary Baptist Church in Southeast Portland, and from 1978 until last June, he served at the Arleta Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ada; son, Jack of Sandy; daughter, Joy of Portland; five brothers, Wilfred and Albert, both of Eckert, Colo., Edwin of Pueblo, Colo., Roger of Portland and Charles of El Camino, Wash.; and three grandchildren.
