Private Hatley enlisted in company I "The Stanly Rebels" of the 52nd North Carolina infantry. He participated in the First and Third day of Gettysburg where he was wounded during the famous Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge on July 3rd. It is possible, based on records, that Private Hatley made it to the stone wall on Cemetery Ridge that afternoon before he was wounded and died in the Second Corps hospital at the Schwartz Farm. He was buried in the corn field behind that farm along with 55 others until his body was moved to Hollywood Cemetery.
