Enlisted on August 9, 1862 at Stanly County, North Carolina as a Private in the 8th North Carolina Infantry, Company H at the age of 32. POW on June 1, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia. Confined on June 4, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred on July 12, 1864 to Elmira. Died of disease as a POW.
