Betty June Long, 84, of the Orange community, died Thursday morning, March 31, 2011, at Summer Trace Nursing Facility, Carmel.

Betty was born June 8, 1926 in Hamilton County, Ohio to Arla F. and Mildred Murphy Bush.

She grew up in Andersonville and was a 1944 graduate of New Salem High School, Rush County. On June 23, 1945, she was married in Madison, Wisconsin to Robert Darrel Long who died May 19, 2008.

During the war, she was employed at American Kitchens and later worked as an aide at Orange Elementary School. Betty was a member of the Orange United Methodist Church, Gideons Auxiliary and taught Sunday School for many years. She was always involved with a Prayer Group and led Bible Study for the Orange community children for several years. She enjoyed raising and spending time with her family and she loved to sing. For over thirty-five years, she was a member of the Rush County Chorus and was a member of the Rushville Music Study Club. Betty was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed collecting and repairing dolls. Her other collections included Precious Moments figurines, stamps and plates. She had a 'green thumb' and thoroughly enjoyed growing flowers.

Betty is survived by six children and their spouses: Jeff A. and Sharon Long of Westfield, John M. Long of Southport, James R. and Debi Long of Lewisville, Joel D. and Vickie Long of Connersville, Jill E. and Mike Bentlage of Richmond, Jeremy C. and Kristy Long of Carmel; her sister and brother-in-law: Colleen and Dwight Griner of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and many special friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, her son, Jay F. Long, who died in 1983; two sisters: Nora Jean Wilson and Bertie Lou Bottomley Yager and a brother, Arla F. "Sonny" Bush.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rev. Dean VanWinkle of the Orange United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will follow in Orange Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and prior to the service on Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Jay F. Long Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the Orange United Methodist Church.
